There was panic and confusion earlier today at the Tincan–Liverpool Bridge axis in Apapa after a tanker reportedly overturned beneath the bridge, causing its contents to spill onto the road.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said that shortly after the accident, several people rushed under the bridge to scoop the spilled substance, believed to be petroleum products, despite the obvious danger involved. The situation has raised serious safety concerns, as the area is highly flammable and any spark could trigger a devastating explosion.
Motorists and residents have described the scene as a “death trap,” warning that such actions could lead to loss of lives if urgent intervention is not made. Traffic around the bridge has also been affected, with vehicles slowing down as people gathered around the tanker.
As of the time of filing this report, emergency responders were yet to fully secure the area, and members of the public are being urged to stay away from the scene for their own safety.
This incident once again highlights the recurring dangers associated with tanker accidents in busy parts of Lagos and the urgent need for improved safety measures and swift emergency response.
