Kano Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Resigns

The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam, has resigned from office.

His resignation was made public in a statement issued on Friday, March 27, by the spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed.

According to the statement, the movement formally notified the public, the people of Kano State, and the wider nation that Abdussalam had stepped down from his position.

The development comes weeks after the Kano State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against the deputy governor. On March 5, the assembly served him with a notice over allegations bordering on gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.

The impeachment move was reportedly linked to a petition submitted by the executive arm of government, citing alleged irregularities during Abdussalam’s tenure as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs between 2023 and 2024.

Political tensions had also intensified following reports that Abdussalam declined to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the All Progressives Congress, a move allegedly taken by his principal, Governor Abba Yusuf, earlier in January.

However, the Kwankwasiyya movement stressed that the deputy governor’s resignation should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this resignation does not in any way constitute an admission of the allegations raised against him by the Kano State House of Assembly,” the statement read.

It further maintained that Abdussalam stands by his record in public service, insisting that his tenure reflects integrity and commitment to the people of Kano State.
