Victoria Ariyo’s Death: Court Frees NYSC Inspector on Bail Pending Trial

An Abeokuta Magistrate Court has granted bail to Abass Olalekan, also known as Ola Kamara, a Local Government Inspector (LGI) with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), following his arraignment over allegations linked to the death of a corps member, Victoria Ariyo.

Olalekan is facing a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and attempted procurement of abortion in connection with the circumstances surrounding Ariyo’s death.

The deceased, who served in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, was reported to have died after complications arising from a terminated pregnancy. She was subsequently laid to rest at Kobape Cemetery.

During proceedings, the prosecution presented a list of five witnesses, although only one was present in court at the time of hearing.

Counsel to the defendant challenged the strength of the case, pointing out significant gaps in the prosecution’s claims. The defence noted the absence of any statement from a qualified medical practitioner and highlighted that no specific drugs were mentioned in the charges.

Relying on constitutional provisions, the lawyer argued that the defendant remains innocent until proven guilty, as stipulated under Section 36(5) of the Constitution. He further maintained that bail is a fundamental right under the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.

“Justice is not only to the victim but also to the defendant. An innocent man must not be punished,” the defence counsel stated.

In granting bail, the court underscored the importance of upholding the presumption of innocence while emphasizing the need for credible and substantiated evidence as the case progresses.
