The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has recorded another significant political loss following the defection of former Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Gaya, who represented Kano South Senatorial District in the last dispensation, formally announced his resignation from the APC in a letter dated April 5, 2026. The letter, addressed to the APC Ward Chairman in Gaya Local Government Area, stated that his decision takes immediate effect.
According to the former lawmaker, his exit from the ruling party followed “careful reflection and wide consultation,” adding that the move aligns with both his personal convictions and the interests of his constituents.
“I extend my sincere gratitude to the party for the platform it provided me and for the cooperation and camaraderie extended over the years,” he stated in the letter.
The resignation was officially acknowledged by the Gaya Arewa Ward Chairman, Adam A. Adam.
Speaking with journalists on Tuesday, Gaya confirmed that he has joined the ADC and is committed to strengthening the party’s structure in Kano State ahead of future political engagements.
He also disclosed that he maintains a cordial relationship with key political figures, including Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, noting that they are aligned in efforts to reposition the ADC for greater political relevance in the state.
Gaya’s defection comes on the heels of a similar move by Gawuna, the APC’s 2023 governorship candidate in Kano State, who exited the party earlier in the week.
Political observers say the wave of defections could reshape party dynamics in Kano, raising fresh questions about the APC’s strength in one of Nigeria’s key political strongholds ahead of upcoming elections.
