Tension gripped the Moniya area of Ibadan, Oyo State, after a 35-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Sanni Salisu, lost his life during a controversial stop-and-search operation on April 24, 2026.
According to police authorities, the incident occurred during what has been described as an unauthorized operation involving two officers, who have since been taken into custody. The victim was reportedly stopped during the exercise when he suddenly developed symptoms believed to be consistent with an epileptic seizure and became unresponsive.
He was immediately rushed to Modupe Hospital in Akinyele, where medical personnel later confirmed him dead.
The development triggered outrage within the community, as news of the incident spread rapidly. Residents, said to have acted on unverified information, staged a violent protest that led to the partial burning of the Kara Police Outpost. Several vehicles were also destroyed in the chaos, while at least one police officer sustained injuries.
Security operatives were eventually deployed to the area to restore calm and prevent further escalation.
In a swift response, the police command confirmed that the officers involved have been detained pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation. The body of the deceased has also been evacuated to Adeoyo State Hospital for a comprehensive autopsy to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Authorities have assured the public that a thorough and transparent investigation will be conducted, emphasizing that anyone found culpable will be held accountable.
The incident has once again brought concerns over police conduct and unauthorized operations to the forefront, with residents calling for justice and stricter oversight of law enforcement activities.
