Resident Doctors Suspend Planned Nationwide Strike After Talks With FG

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its planned nationwide strike following an agreement with the Federal Government of Nigeria on key demands affecting its members.

The decision was announced on Tuesday, April 7, after an emergency meeting of the association’s National Executive Council, where members reviewed assurances presented by government representatives.

NARD said the suspension was based on commitments by the government to address pressing issues, including the payment of outstanding salaries and allowances, as well as improvements in doctors’ welfare.

The association noted that progress made during negotiations encouraged it to allow more time for dialogue. Key areas under discussion include the settlement of salary arrears, hazard allowances, and concerns surrounding the Medical Residency Training Fund.

However, NARD emphasized that the underlying issues remain unresolved, adding that the suspension of the strike is conditional on the government fulfilling its promises.

The doctors also stated that they will continue to closely monitor developments as engagement with the government continues.
