Plateau Records 11 Confirmed Cholera Cases, Five Deaths

The Plateau State Government has confirmed an outbreak of cholera in parts of the state, with 11 confirmed cases, five deaths, and 53 suspected infections recorded so far.

The State Commissioner for Health, Nicholas Baamlong, disclosed this on Sunday while briefing journalists in Jos.

According to the commissioner, the confirmed and suspected cases were reported in Pushit, Mangu 1, and Mangu 2 communities in Mangu Local Government Area.

Baamlong said the Ministry of Health has intensified efforts to contain the outbreak, prevent further transmission, and reduce its impact on affected communities.

He explained that the state government has already implemented several emergency response measures, including the deployment of additional Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) to affected areas, expansion of treatment centres and isolation facilities, and the procurement of Rapid Diagnostic Test kits, intravenous fluids, and other essential medical supplies.

The commissioner further revealed that the ministry has activated an Incident Management System (IMS) to coordinate a comprehensive and multi-sectoral response to the outbreak.

“The activation of the IMS ensures a coordinated, efficient, and accountable response structure in line with national and international emergency response frameworks,” he stated.

Baamlong explained that cholera is an acute diarrheal disease caused by the consumption of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.

He urged residents of Mangu Local Government Area and neighboring communities to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to preventive measures to curb the spread of the disease.

The commissioner advised residents to drink safe and treated water, maintain proper hand hygiene, avoid open defecation, and ensure proper waste disposal at all times.

Health authorities have also called on residents experiencing symptoms such as severe diarrhoea, vomiting, or dehydration to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest healthcare facility.

The outbreak has raised concerns among residents as health officials continue surveillance and response efforts aimed at preventing further infections and fatalities across the state.
