A friendly football match between teams from Eniwari and Opuama communities in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State ended in tragedy on Saturday after a youth was allegedly attacked and killed following the game.
The victim, identified as Thomas Ogbianawei, was reportedly from Eniwari community.
According to community sources, tensions erupted during the match when a disagreement broke out among players from both teams. What began as a misunderstanding on the field reportedly escalated into a confrontation, creating a tense atmosphere throughout the game.
Sources said that although players were involved in the altercation, spectators and match officials did not participate in the clash.
The situation reportedly took a deadly turn after the match when some members of the visiting Opuama team were said to have encountered Ogbianawei along the route between Eniwari and Fonibiri communities.
According to reports, the group allegedly identified him as an indigene of Eniwari and attacked him. He sustained severe injuries during the assault and later died.
The incident has thrown the Eniwari community into mourning and sparked concerns over rising tensions between the two communities.
Despite the tragic development, community leaders have called for calm and urged residents, particularly youths, to avoid retaliatory actions that could further worsen the situation.
The Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Hon. Target Segibo, confirmed the incident and appealed to both communities to maintain peace while authorities investigate the matter.
He urged leaders and residents of Eniwari and Opuama to exercise restraint and avoid actions capable of escalating tensions in the area.
Also confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Bayelsa State Police Command, DSP Musa Mohammed, disclosed that an investigation has commenced.
According to the police spokesman, one suspect has already been arrested in connection with the killing, while efforts are ongoing to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident and bring all those responsible to justice.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over violence associated with sporting events and the need for peaceful conflict resolution within communities.
