Sustainability Advocate Celebrates Birthday With Community Cleanup in Lagos

In a time where birthdays are often celebrated with parties, trips, and elaborate events, Zainab Olayiwola chose a different path.

To mark her birthday on May 4, 2026, the sustainability advocate and founder of Ecowambe organized a community cleanup in the Ilaje community of Bariga, bringing together volunteers, friends, and residents in an effort to promote environmental responsibility and healthier public spaces.

The cleanup was carried out in collaboration with Africa Upcycle Community, whose involvement played a major role in mobilizing the community and coordinating support for the project.

Rather than a traditional celebration, the initiative brought together volunteers, residents, and environmental advocates who spent the morning clearing waste, improving drainage,  and removing debris from the lagoon-side waterway—small but important actions that help reduce pollution affecting surrounding waterways and marine ecosystems.

What stood out most was the turnout from residents themselves. Both young and old members of the community came out on a Monday morning to support the effort, reflecting the power of grassroots action and collective responsibility.

Speaking about the project, Zainab shared:

Impact isn’t only in grand gestures. It’s in the little ways we show up with intention and people willing to do the work.”

Speaking on the collaboration, Joy Nwaeze, founder of Africa Upcycle Community, emphasized the importance of community-driven environmental action.

“Real change starts when people decide to care about the spaces they live in. Initiatives like this remind us that sustainability begins at the grassroots level.”

The collaboration also highlighted the growing role organizations like Africa Upcycle Community continue to play in driving environmental awareness and encouraging community-led sustainability initiatives across Nigeria.

The initiative later drew the attention of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, which reached out to support the cleanup effort after learning about the project.

Beyond the environmental impact, the cleanup served as a reminder that meaningful change can begin with ordinary people choosing to take action within their communities.

The project was ultimately a simple but intentional way to celebrate another year of life: by giving back.
