A 100-level student of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), Delta State, was allegedly stabbed to death on Tuesday evening following a violent altercation with his brother.
The deceased, whose identity had not been officially disclosed by the university as of the time of filing this report, was reportedly attacked behind Hostel C on the institution's campus.
According to sources familiar with the incident, the two brothers, who are both students of the university, initially engaged in a fight inside their hostel room before they were separated by a roommate.
However, the disagreement reportedly resumed shortly afterward when both men moved to a bushy area behind Hostel C, where the confrontation turned fatal.
During the clash, the victim was allegedly stabbed multiple times.
Despite sustaining severe injuries, he reportedly managed to crawl from the scene to a nearby walkway, where he collapsed in a pool of blood.
Students fetching water in the area discovered him and rushed him to the university's Medical Centre. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the facility.
A union official in the institution, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the two students were children of the same father.
“One was fatally stabbed, and he managed to climb to the walkway where some students fetching water saw him and brought him to the Medical Centre, but it was too late,” the source said.
The spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident and disclosed that the suspect had been arrested.
He added that further details would be released after investigators from the relevant police units complete preliminary findings into the case.
An official responsible for Hostel C declined to comment on the incident, stating that the university management was handling the matter.
“The university management is handling the matter. I can’t say anything for now,” the official said.
The union official also revealed that the porter on duty was preparing a detailed report to assist the university management in its investigation and determine the institution's next course of action.
As of the time of filing this report, the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, had not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
