The death of a 25-year-old medical doctor serving under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The deceased, identified as Dr. Wisdom Oghenetega Enakirerhi, was said to have fallen seriously ill while serving as a corps member. According to reports, he repeatedly requested a three-week sick leave to seek proper medical treatment, but his request was allegedly denied.
The claims were made by a medical practitioner, Dr. Akpoyibo, who shared details of the incident online.
According to him, Dr. Enakirerhi had spent seven years in medical school, completed his one-year internship, and was undergoing his mandatory NYSC service when his health deteriorated.
He further alleged that the deceased's father and brother, who are both medical doctors, pleaded with the relevant authorities to allow him return home for treatment, but their request was reportedly declined.
The report claimed the young doctor was eventually granted permission to leave only a few days before his death.
As of the time of filing this report, the NYSC has not issued an official statement addressing the allegations surrounding the incident.
The tragic development has reignited conversations about the welfare of corps members, particularly those battling serious health conditions during their service year, with many Nigerians calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to Dr. Enakirerhi's death.
