Nigerian-born Councillor Christopher Adegoke has made history after becoming the first Black chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council since its establishment in 1889.
Adegoke was appointed to the position during a Full Council meeting on Thursday, May 14, 2026, taking over from Councillor Jan Goold. Nottinghamshire County Council confirmed that he is the authority’s first Black chairman.
The appointment marked a significant milestone for representation in public service in the United Kingdom and was also welcomed by Nigeria’s diaspora community. The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) congratulated Adegoke, describing his achievement as a proud moment for Nigeria and Nigerians abroad.
Adegoke, who represents Hucknall West and was elected under the Reform UK platform, said he was honored to take up the position and looked forward to engaging with residents, organizations, charities, and businesses across Nottinghamshire.
He said his wife and two children were proud of his appointment, adding that he entered politics because he wanted to help his community and serve as a voice for residents.
Adegoke brings more than 25 years of experience spanning international education, public administration and community leadership. His tenure as chairman covers the 2026/27 municipal year
