The demolition and redevelopment of Onitsha Main Market has continued to generate concerns over the impact on traders and shop owners. Recent reports confirm that the Anambra State Government is undertaking reconstruction aimed at modernising the market, while traders have also raised concerns about losses and hardship resulting from the demolition.
However, the exercise has also generated complaints from traders who said they suffered significant financial losses after their shops and businesses were affected. The Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ONICCIMA) previously acknowledged the hardship faced by affected traders and called for a transparent compensation framework and alternative trading spaces.
Earlier reports also showed displaced traders expressing frustration over the loss of their shops and difficulties continuing their businesses after the demolition.
The circumstances surrounding Mmaduabuchukwu's reported death, including whether it was directly connected to the demolition exercise, could not be independently established from the reports reviewed.
