Court Sentences Fatima Sanda to Two Years in Prison Over Sexual Exploitation of Minor

A Borno State High Court sitting in Maiduguri has sentenced a 37-year-old woman, Fatima Sanda, to two years’ imprisonment for procuring a 16-year-old girl for sexual exploitation.

The conviction was secured by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), which announced the judgment in a statement.

The court, presided over by Justice Aisha M. Ndume at Court 10, also ordered Sanda to pay ₦500,000 in compensation to the victim.

According to NAPTIP, Sanda was convicted of procuring the minor and subjecting her to sexual exploitation by other people, an offence under Section 16(1) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015, as amended.

The court subsequently imposed the two-year prison sentence and directed the convict to pay the specified compensation to the victim.

The judgment adds to ongoing legal efforts to prosecute human trafficking and sexual exploitation offences in Nigeria.

NAPTIP has continued to pursue cases involving the exploitation of vulnerable persons, including children and teenagers.
