The Nigerian military has launched a manhunt for gunmen who attacked a military checkpoint in Plateau State, killing a soldier and carting away two weapons.
The attack occurred at about 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, at the Sopp checkpoint in Ungwan Boka, Riyom Local Government Area, where troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) were on duty.
Security sources said the attackers opened fire on the troops from different directions, triggering a gun battle before they escaped into nearby bushes.
One soldier was killed during the exchange of gunfire, while the attackers reportedly made away with two weapons.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace, Captain Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, described the attack as deliberate and unprovoked.
Oteh said troops had restored normalcy in the area and were pursuing the attackers to ensure their arrest and recover the stolen weapons.
He added that security personnel had heightened vigilance around the community to prevent further attacks and reassure residents of their safety.
The military urged members of the public to remain calm, continue their lawful activities and provide credible information that could assist security agencies in tracking down those responsible.
