The Federal Government has announced the release of three Nigerians who were detained in Saudi Arabia on suspicion of drug trafficking. The individuals — Abdulhamid Sadieq, Maryam Abdullahi, and Bahijah Abdullahi — were arrested in August 2025 at the King Abdul Aziz International Airport, Jeddah, but have now been fully cleared of any wrongdoing.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed that Saudi authorities found no evidence linking them to an attempt to smuggle prohibited substances through the airport.
How They Were Arrested
According to the ministry, the suspects were apprehended after prohibited items were discovered in luggage fraudulently connected to their air tickets by criminal syndicates at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, without their knowledge or involvement.
Immediately after the arrests were reported, the Consul General of Nigeria in Jeddah, Amb. Muazam Nayaya, contacted Saudi officials and notified Abuja. The mission also sought support from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to aid joint investigations.
Nigeria’s Intervention
Throughout the detention period, the Nigerian Consulate:
- Engaged Saudi authorities consistently
- Conducted regular prison visits
- Provided legal representation
- Ensured the detainees received due process
Following extensive investigations, Saudi officials cleared the three Nigerians and released them on September 14 and 15, 2025.
Return to Nigeria
The ministry added that:
- Maryam Abdullahi and Bahijah Abdullahi returned to Nigeria on November 5, 2025
- Abdulhamid Sadieq had his travel ban lifted on December 2, 2025, and arrangements are underway for his return
FG Commends Saudi Authorities
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed appreciation for the cooperation of the Saudi government, noting its professionalism throughout the process. It also acknowledged the vital role played by:
- The NDLEA, and
- The Nigerian Consulate in Jeddah
Their coordinated efforts ensured a just resolution of the case.
