  • “My Father Called Comedy a Stupid Business” — Sabinus Opens Up on His Early Struggles

  • Popular Nigerian comedian, Emmanuel Ejekwu, widely known as Sabinus, has revealed how his father strongly opposed his journey into the world of comedy.

Sharing his story, Sabinus explained that his father had always wanted him to become a lawyer. Despite trying several times, he couldn’t secure admission to study Law, which led him to settle for Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt.

According to him, it was during his time on campus that he discovered skit-making and decided to give it a try—though it didn’t yield money at the beginning.

After graduating, Sabinus kept his comedy career a secret from his father. But everything changed a year later when his father began seeing his face on comedy show posters. To confirm his suspicion, he reached out to Sabinus’ sisters, who admitted he was fully into comedy.

This revelation infuriated his father, who reportedly exclaimed:

“Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer…”

Despite the initial disappointment from his father, Sabinus has grown into one of Nigeria’s most successful and celebrated comedians today, proving that passion and consistency truly pay off.
