Two people have been killed and three others injured after suspected political thugs opened fire during the All Progressives Congress (APC) ward congress in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State on February 18, 2026.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen stormed parts of the town, firing sporadically and creating chaos as party members and local residents fled to safety. Panic spread through the community as shots rang out during the exercise.
Among those caught in the attack was Raphael, the younger brother of the state APC Chairman, Engr. Ade Adetimehin. Raphael was reportedly mistaken for his brother, shot multiple times, dragged from his vehicle and attacked with machetes. His vehicle was also set on fire during the assault. He sustained serious injuries but is currently receiving medical attention.
Police confirmed that five people were targeted in the incident. Two victims later died at the hospital, while the other three are receiving treatment for their injuries.
The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Adebowale Lawal, quickly led security operatives to the scene to restore order. Lawal said investigations are ongoing, and additional tactical teams have been deployed to the area to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of residents.
Authorities have appealed to the public to remain calm as they work to bring the perpetrators to justice.
