A Nigerian national, identified as Christian Eze Promise, has died while in police custody in West Delhi, India.
According to authorities, the incident occurred on Sunday in the Rajouri Garden area when the deceased was reportedly riding a scooter against traffic towards a metro station.
Police said officers became suspicious and attempted to stop him, but he allegedly rammed into a police motorcycle, fell, and fled on foot before being chased and apprehended.
He was subsequently taken to a Special Staff office near Tagore Garden, where officers claimed he became uncooperative and later complained of feeling unwell.
The police said he was immediately rushed to Guru Gobind Singh Hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.
Authorities disclosed that relevant bodies, including the National Human Rights Commission of India, the Ministry of External Affairs, and the Nigerian High Commission, have been notified of the incident.
The circumstances surrounding his death are expected to be investigated.
