Ex-Tinubu Campaign Coordinator Senator Kabiru Marafa Accuses INEC of APC Domination, Warns 2027 Polls Credibility at Risk

Former coordinator of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Organisation in Zamfara State, Senator Kabiru Marafa, has openly accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of losing its neutrality, claiming the electoral body is now heavily dominated by members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Marafa, who represented Zamfara Central Senatorial District, made the allegation during a recent interview while speaking on the political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 general elections. He warned that the alleged partisan appointments into INEC violate the law, which requires officials of the commission to remain non-partisan, and could seriously undermine public confidence in the next presidential poll. “The situation is confused, and I think politicians today didn’t learn any lessons over the years,” Marafa said. He expressed deep concern that the ruling party is positioning itself to dominate the political space and turn Nigeria into a one-party state, describing such a move as impossible and bound to fail. “You cannot, by any stretch of the imagination, railroad a country of nearly 300 million people into just one political party. It just cannot work,” the former senator declared. Marafa said he no longer has confidence in INEC because many of those appointed to key positions are card-carrying members of political parties instead of neutral individuals as stipulated by law. “How can I have confidence in INEC? I don’t know the kind of people… The law establishing INEC provides that anybody that is to be appointed into the umpire must be neutral, non-partisan,” he stated. “But what we have today—everybody knows that it is card-carrying members of political parties that are being appointed into positions of authority in INEC.” The senator also criticised INEC’s handling of the leadership crisis in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying the commission’s position on the matter further raises questions about its impartiality. He took a swipe at the ruling APC, accusing it of trying to avoid a truly competitive election despite controlling several states and key institutions, describing the situation as “unfortunate and laughable.” Marafa further questioned the proposed election timetable, arguing that the long gap between party primaries and the general election makes no political sense. He concluded with a strong warning: “In all these things, anybody that tried to play God, God always has a way of showing human beings that God is God and human beings are human beings.” *ReportNaija will keep you updated on reactions to Senator Marafa’s comments and any response from INEC.*
