Ogun State governorship aspirant Iyabo Obasanjo has announced the suspension of her 2027 ambition following the emergence of Senator Solomon Adeola (Yayi) as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development was confirmed in a statement issued by Obasanjo on Monday, April 13, 2026, after a party caucus meeting held in Abeokuta, where Adeola was adopted as the party’s flagbearer.
In her statement, Obasanjo congratulated Adeola on his emergence and expressed appreciation to party leaders for the opportunity to participate in the process.
“I congratulate him and wish him every success. I also thank the state and national leaders of our great party for the opportunity to participate in the nomination process.
“Based on these developments, I have decided to suspend my gubernatorial aspiration,” she said.
She also extended gratitude to her supporters across Ogun State, acknowledging their loyalty and encouragement throughout her campaign.
“To my supporters across Ogun State, I am deeply grateful for your calm, steadfast support and unwavering trust throughout this journey. Together, we move forward with patience, strength and hope,” she added.
Senator Adeola, who currently represents Ogun West in the Senate, was adopted as the APC consensus candidate during the meeting held at the party’s secretariat in Abeokuta.
His emergence is seen as a significant step in shaping the party’s strategy ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
Obasanjo’s decision to step down signals a consolidation of support within the APC as preparations gradually build toward the next election cycle.
With the party now rallying behind a consensus candidate, attention is expected to shift toward broader campaign strategies and opposition positioning in the state.
