The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has sacked head coach Pape Thiaw and his entire coaching staff following the country’s disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup
The decision comes after Senegal’s Round of 32 elimination, ending Thiaw’s spell in charge less than two years after he took over the national team.
The Lions of Teranga entered the tournament as one of Africa’s top contenders and advanced from the group stage, but their campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion after surrendering a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Belgium after extra time.
The defeat drew heavy criticism from fans and football pundits, who questioned the team’s tactics, substitutions and inability to hold onto their advantage.
Following the backlash, the federation opted for a complete overhaul of the technical crew, dismissing Thiaw along with every member of his backroom staff.
Thiaw succeeded Aliou Cissé in 2024 and guided Senegal to qualification for the 2026 World Cup while also leading the team at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite those accomplishments, the FSF believes a new direction is needed as the country prepares for future international competitions, including the upcoming AFCON qualifiers and the next World Cup qualifying campaign.
The federation is expected to begin the search for a new head coach in the coming weeks as it looks to rebuild and return Senegal to competing for major honours.
