EFCC Raids Internet Fraud Academy in Abuja, Arrests 31 Suspects Including Two Kingpins

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have busted an alleged internet fraud academy in Becki Estate, Karu, Federal Capital Territory, arresting 31 suspected fraudsters on Thursday, April 9.

The suspects, made up of two kingpins and several interns, were nabbed right in the middle of their “tutorials” on cyber fraud techniques.

According to a statement from the anti-graft agency, the raid led to the recovery of several phones, 18 laptop computers and other sophisticated gadgets used in the illegal operation.

Investigation by EFCC operatives revealed that some of the interns were lured from as far as Benue State. The academy proprietors reportedly promised them legitimate job offers, only for the young men to be handed communication devices, laptops and specialised software upon arrival, setting them up for full-scale training in internet fraud.

The EFCC said the suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned in court as soon as investigations are concluded.

This latest crackdown is part of the commission’s ongoing efforts to dismantle the growing network of “Yahoo academies” across the country, which have been recruiting and training young Nigerians in cybercrime.
