Prominent political figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Rotimi Amaechi, on Tuesday led a protest in Abuja under the banner of #OccupyINEC.
The demonstration was organized in response to the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to derecognize the Mark-led executive committee of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move that has stirred political tension within the party and beyond.
Supporters and members of the African Democratic Congress gathered in large numbers, expressing dissatisfaction with the electoral body’s action, which they described as unjust and politically motivated.
In a symbolic show of defiance, the protesters commenced the rally by singing Nigeria’s former national anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” a gesture interpreted by many as a call to return to what they described as the nation’s foundational values.
Chants and placards dominated the protest ground, with demonstrators calling on INEC to reverse its decision and respect internal party processes. The presence of key opposition figures added significant political weight to the demonstration, signaling a broader alignment of interests across party lines.
While addressing supporters, some of the leaders emphasized the importance of protecting democratic institutions and ensuring that electoral processes remain transparent and free from undue interference.
The protest remained largely peaceful, with security personnel on ground to maintain order as tensions simmered around the unfolding political developments.
Observers say the outcome of the dispute between INEC and the ADC faction could have wider implications for party politics and alignments ahead of future elections.
