Kano Woman Arraigned Over Alleged Beheading of Co-Wife

A woman identified as Safiya Usaini has been arraigned before a Kano Magistrates’ Court for allegedly killing and beheading her co-wife following an argument over an alleged spying incident.

Usaini was brought before Magistrate Auwal Yusuf after the police concluded their investigation into the alleged killing.

The prosecution counsel, Barrister Muhammad Aliyu Umar, presented the suspect before the court and read the charge of culpable homicide against her.

However, the court declined to proceed with the matter, ruling that it lacked the jurisdiction to hear a case involving an alleged murder.

The prosecutor subsequently requested an adjournment to allow the prosecution to obtain legal advice from the government on the appropriate next step in the case.

Magistrate Yusuf granted the request and adjourned the matter until September 30, 2026, for further mention. The court also ordered that the suspect be remanded in a correctional centre pending further proceedings.

According to the allegations, the incident occurred in Loko, Takai Local Government Area of Kano State, where Usaini allegedly attacked her co-wife, identified as Safiya Saleh, with a machete and beheaded her.

The suspect was said to have become angry after accusing her co-wife of spying on her while she was in the bathroom.

The case has since attracted attention due to the disturbing nature of the alleged incident, while the legal process is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the death and the appropriate charges against the suspect.

Usaini remains presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
